The fee you stop paying
When you book a holiday rental through a large platform you are charged twice over. The owner pays a host commission, which is priced into the nightly rate you see. Then you pay a guest service fee at checkout, commonly 12–15% of the total, which is the number that makes the final screen look nothing like the search result.
Booking direct removes the second charge outright, and often some of the first, because an owner who is not paying commission has room to quote a lower rate. On a week that advertised at $200 a night, that is usually somewhere between $150 and $250 back in your pocket.
What you take on
Honesty matters more here than the saving. A direct booking has no platform standing behind it. There is no app to complain to, no automatic refund, no held deposit. What protects you instead is ordinary care, and it is not much to ask:

Every direct booking keeps the money with the person who actually cleaned the room, tended the garden and answered your questions, rather than routing a slice of it to a platform that did none of those things. It is a little like leaving a tip — except better, because it costs you nothing, and it is the whole margin rather than the rounding on top of it.
You keep something else, too: your own data. A direct enquiry is a plain message between you and an owner. There is no account to create, no profile to feed, no record of everywhere you have looked being sold back to you as an advertisement. The owner learns what they need in order to host you and nothing more, and when the stay is over, that is where it ends.
