About Qualicum Beach
Qualicum Beach is a long shallow bay, a village on a hill above it, and not much in between. The tide goes out a long way and comes back warm over sun-heated sand, which is the whole reason people have been coming here since the 1920s. The village is a handful of blocks: a bakery, a bookshop, two pubs, the museum. The beach is a ten minute walk downhill from most of it.
March brings the Brant geese and the herring, and with them the only crowd the town gets outside July and August. Spring and early autumn are the quiet, cheap, and frankly better months: the water is no colder in September than it is in June.
Every place listed here is booked directly with the person who owns it. You get their email or their own booking page, you pay them, and nothing is added on top: no service fee, no booking fee, no cut to anyone in the middle.
Booking direct, answered
- Is it cheaper to book direct with the owner?
- Sometimes, and it depends on where you would otherwise be booking. Vrbo adds a guest service fee at checkout, and booking direct removes that line. Booking.com works the other way: its commission, around 15%, is charged to the owner and never shown to you, so any saving has to come out of the nightly rate instead. Airbnb is moving to the same owner-paid model in late 2026. Either way the commission is real; it just moves from a fee line to the rate, and what the owner does with it is up to them.
- Does this site charge a booking fee?
- No, and there is nothing to charge, because you never book through us. Every listing sends you to the owner's own email or booking page, and the arrangement from that point is between the two of you. Listing a place is free as well.
- Who do I pay, and what protects the booking?
- You pay the owner directly, on whatever terms they set. Most take a deposit and the balance before arrival. What protects you is the owner's own cancellation and refund policy, in writing, which is worth asking for before you send money. No platform guarantee stands behind a direct booking.
- How far is Qualicum Beach from the ferry or the airport?
- About 45 minutes from the Nanaimo ferry terminals at Departure Bay and Duke Point, and 25 minutes from Nanaimo airport. Comox airport is about an hour north. You will want a car.
